Kata called Basic
I am looking for the orginal Japanese name for a kata that we practice called Basic. It was passed down to me from my Sensei Rickey Stowe and to him from his Sensei Doshu Shiro Shintaku. I have the kata in written form below. All help is appreciated. Thanks.
BASIC KATA

2. READY STANCE.
3. SWEEP WITH THE RIGHT FOOT AND ST...... full article
I wrote this article in relation to the importance of flow. It relates to karate generally, but I believe it has special significance for the goju karateka, since the kind of "flow" to which I refer is, I believe, built into goju kata.
I'm distressed to see this flow (or "connectivity" ) being disrupted by some gojuka via the introduction of unnecessary/extraneous hip loading (ie. pre-loading), often referred to as "koshi" and seen by many as "the way to go" (when in fact it is, in my view, a blind alley).
Dan, I enjoyed reading your article on the " theory" of flow. While I don't usually read long articles or posts, I found it to be fascinating, because this is what I try to teach my students. I firmly believe there shouldn't be pauses between the "block" and counter. This is what I love about Goju-ryu karate. It teaches us to move our entire body forward, without stopping, when performing an application.
Although what I saw from Mr. Erik Angerhofer was awesome, I couldn't help but note what you commented on about his pauses between his blocks and counters. I will say that this probably wouldn't mean anything in a confrontation between him and an inexperienced fighter, (or an experienced one for that matter.)
Also, I don't believe that the power that he might generate, and the power that you or I might generate would make a difference, if you catch my drift.
I agree Carl. I did try to highlight the fact that my respect for Erik's karate and overall ability is not diminished. I rather suspect that in a confrontation Erik would be a very tough customer indeed, regardless of how he chooses to do his kata. However I felt I had to point out the differences to illustrate my point about why I choose to do things the way I do.
