Goal Setting for Karate Students
As the new year approaches, let’s keep in mind that this is an excellent time to set our personal progress goals for 2006.

Setting goals in karate has some unique challenges in that the benefits of karate training come from gradual progress over many years and not from isolated accomplishments. While it may be tempting to set goals such as “grade advancement” this can actually work a...... full article
Editor JP Williams
JP [that would be me, Johnpaul] is the Senior Editor and Officer of GojuRyu.net and the San Francisco Gojukan Karatedo instructor.

Unless otherwise noted, editorials, articles, documents, diagrams, research, historical timelines and other items [yadda yadda yadda] in and of the Gojuryu.net also known as Gojuryu Network, All Gojuryu Network, GRN, etc; are written by Johnpaul Williams and the intellectual property thereof and all copyright issues are exercised. We do sometimes receive submissions and always award full credit for such. Please see the FAQ's page for additional information.

Originally Gojuryu.net was setup [first reserved in 1995] as a dojo listing service with a short chronological historic timeline and the majority of my writings were published to Gojuryu dot com [where my old articles remain]. Today www.GojuRyu.net, is the worlds principal resource for Okinawa Martial Arts and Gojuryu Karatedo. This research resource is the primary communication forum to thousands of people who practice Gojuryu Karatedo internationally and serves as my online thesis for personal and student reference.

I'm often asked why my name does not appear on any of the articles much less the majority of the website other than this page and very few others which are not in the primary links navigation. Answer - I'm not looking to receive fame for my contributions to Gojuryu Karatedo [I don't think they are all that big-a-thing] as I am sure there will be rewards in other parts of life. I try to avoid putting my name to the articles because the community of Gojuryu Karatedo references much of this information in their dojo [and associations] and circumstances dictate that it may not be in their best interests to discover they have been following the research of any particular Ryuha, Kaiha, group or person, yet alone a low level Yon dan.

About me: I finally have a personal profile similar to those of the Senior Sensei on the website www.gojuryu.net however they are in an elite field all their own. Other than Gojuryu Karatedo I have also trained in the styles of:
  • Shotokan Karatedo,
  • Shitoryu Karatedo [Hayashi-Ha].
  • Kuk Sool [Korean Martial Art].
  • Ryueiryu Karatedo
  • Matayoshi Kobudo (Traditional weapons - Kingairyu).
  • By trade I've been heavily involved in San Francisco's commercial real estate market [www.PropertySF.com, Want to buy a building, home or lease an office in San Francisco? Drop me an email - teaching karatedo for free does nothing for my mortgage], however in todays market I have returned to technology sales with a mobile solutions company.

  • Over the years I have been:
  • Semi Guru to the Mobile Technology industry.
  • Account Representative in the Investment Banking [Venture Capital] Industry of the Silicon Valley - specializing is A.S.I.A.N. & Pacific Rim enterprises,
  • Regional Sales Manager of Corporate and Educational - Computer Hardware & Distribution.
  • Account Manager for a Software Service distribution company.
  • Extensive work in the Commercial Real Estate Industry.
  • Film, television and entertainment industry having also performed stunt-work.
  • Worked in Bay Area Law Enforcement
  • Managed a 64,000 sq ft South Bay Area Night-Club Complex.

    Accreditations: Over the years, I have successfully competed and trained extensively through out the USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Brazil, Europe, England, Australia, Singapore and Canada.

    Current positions and grading includes:
  • Godan - JKF Gojukai Gojuryu Karatedo;
  • Godan - Seiwakai International Gojuryu Karatedo;
  • Nidan-EKGB [EKF-England];
  • Sandan [Shodan and Nidan] Nippon Gojuryu Karatedo [ Cornell Watson, California];
  • Sensei Menkyo [Certified Instructors license] - Seiwakai Gojuryu Karatedo;
  • Shodan - Matayoshi Kobudo [Japan];
  • Shodan - International Karatedo Gojukai Association [IKGA].
  • Kyo Sa Nim - Kuk Sool Tae Kwon Do
  • Officer - JKF Goju Ryu USA.
  • Officer - JKF Goju Ryu California.
  • General member - Dai Nippon Butokukai.
  • Instructor - San Francisco Gojukan Club;
  • Senior officer and Co-Founder - Northern California Gojuryu Karatedo Tomodachi Kenkyu Kai.
  • Editor and Officer - Gojuryu.net, the All Gojuryu Network.

     All SF Gojukan classes are accredited through the Japan Karatedo Federation Gojukai (JKF Gojukai).
