Ritsurei (Jigi) San Shurui 立礼三種類 Three Types of Standing Bow
There are three degrees of bowing for both Ritsurei 立礼 (standing bow) as well as Zarei 座礼 (seated bow). The three degree of standing bow are:
- Eshaku 会釈 –
- Eshaku is least respectful standing bow.
- Bend downward from the waist approximately 15 to 20°.
- This standing bow is for such circumstances greeting acquaintances.
- Keirei 敬礼 –
- Keirei is the most common standing bow shown in general circumstances.
- When performing from a standing position, bend downward from the waist approximately 30 to 35°.
- Keirei 敬礼 for Budō 武道 can be lower than Keirei 敬礼 for business.
- This standing bow is made when you present your Kata 形.
- Saikeirei 最敬礼
- Saikeirei is the most respectful and pronounced standing bow.
- When performing from a standing position, bend downward from the waist approximately 45 to 50°.
- This standing bow is for respect of high dignitaries, extreme apologies or deepest regards or sympathy and in worship.
