May / June 2025 SKSV Grading (Shinsa) Results
By Johnpaul Williams – June 4, 2025
Karatedō is a profound journey fraught with obstacles and setbacks, yet filled with goals and milestones. Fortunately, rigorous Karate training inherently builds tenacity, mental pliability, and formidable physical fortitude.
Congratulations to all those who successfully graded this summer! Please note that club certificates are not pre-printed in anticipation. They are carefully created and finalized only after thorough consideration of each applicant’s grading audition on the tatami.
Please review the schedule at www.gojuryu.net/schedule/ for dates in the upcoming quarter where you may pick up your formalized certificates. For additional details regarding your ongoing progression, please refer to the official SKSV Club Guide.
Tokyu (等級): Club & Dōjō Grading Requirements (道場の格付け要件)
In the relentless pursuit of karate excellence, it becomes evident that not all training facilities are equal in their dedication to tradition and strict standards. Due to our direct historical lineages, robust affiliations with prestigious organizations, and collective credentials, Seiwakai Karate Silicon Valley upholds the absolute highest standards of traditional Japanese martial arts. It is our duty to empower our participants to establish and attain their objectives, guided by a meticulously designed, globally recognized grading syllabus (subject to periodic revisions).
Our comprehensive curriculum not only aligns with but deliberately surpasses the rigorous grading requirements set forth by USA Karate (USA-NKF)—recognized as the official Karate representative by the US Olympic Committee. Furthermore, we proudly adhere to the standards of the JKF Gōjūkai (the authoritative Gōjū-Ryū organization representing the Japan Karatedō Federation to the Japan Ministry of Education) and Japan Seiwakai Gōjū-Ryū Karatedō, our club’s “Honbu” (headquarters), which enables our seamless membership to these elite global organizations.
The Traditional Belt System (帯の制度)
For over half a century, numerous traditional Gōjū-Ryū dōjō adhered to a simplified four-color belt system: White, Green, Brown, and Black. Today, aligning with the Japan Karatedō Federation’s modern evolution, we have adopted a standardized belt color progression. This ensures your rank and hard work are recognized worldwide. This progression correlates with the following grades:
| Belt Color | Rank (Kyu) | Significance & Skill Level |
|---|---|---|
| White | 10th Kyu | The starting point; representing a mind open to learning. |
| Yellow | 9th Kyu | Signifying the initial step in grasping foundational body mechanics. |
| Orange | 8th & 7th Kyu | Marking tangible progress, dedication, and balance. |
| Green | 6th & 5th Kyu | Demonstrating solid proficiency in fundamental techniques (Kihon). |
| Purple | 4th Kyu | An advanced level of competence and transitional maturity. |
| Brown | 3rd, 2nd, & 1st Kyu | A high degree of skill, knowledge, and preparation for black belt. |
| Black | Shodan & Above | Exceptional basic skill, mastery of fundamentals, and the beginning of advanced study. |
Note: The absence of solid red and blue belts is intentional within the dōjō, as they are reserved specifically for competition scoring to assist judges and referees. Historically within our tradition, a red belt signifies a teacher’s license (Hanshi) or a founding member.
General Grading Requirements (格付け要件)
In a dōjō, the size of the group can influence the formality required to maintain structure and consistency. Smaller clubs may conduct informal gradings within regular training sessions. However, as our membership continues to grow at the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, a highly structured grading environment becomes necessary. Below is a general outline of the requirements for grading success:
- Technical Proficiency (技術の習熟度): Precise, powerful execution of rank-specific techniques and mastery of Kata (形).
- Knowledge of Karate Principles (空手の原則に関する知識): A deep, demonstrable understanding of Budo philosophy.
- Etiquette and Conduct (礼儀と行動): Proper conduct, respect (Reigi), and humility toward instructors and peers.
- Physical Fitness (体力): Maintaining conditioning suitable for enduring rigorous traditional practice.
- Commitment and PUNCTUAL Attendance (コミットメントと出席): Consistent and dedicated presence at the dōjō.
- Kumite Skills (組手の技術): Proficiency in sparring, distancing, and practical defensive application.
- Theory Examination (理論試験): Successful completion of written or oral examinations on karate theory and application.
- Demonstrated Improvement (向上の証明): Showing continuous growth in skill and mindset.
We encourage all students to embrace these grading requirements as a vital path toward personal development and excellence in Gōjū-Ryū Karatedō. Our commitment to maintaining these ambitious standards reflects our dedication to preserving the true essence of this traditional martial art.
Together, Seiwakai Karate Silicon Valley Gōjūkan will continue to proudly uphold the legacy of the Dai Nippon Butokukai (大日本武徳会), Gōjū-Ryū Karatedō Seiwakai (剛柔流空手道誠和会), and the JKF Gōjūkai (全日本空手道連盟剛柔会) with unwavering dedication and precision.
Please review the SKSV Club Guide where you will find the complete outline to ensure you are a successful candidate when it is time to grade.
