December 2025 SKSV Karate Grading (Shinsa) Results

By Johnpaul WilliamsDecember 31, 2025

Karatedo is a Budo, and Budo is a lifelong journey of patience, goals, obstacles, and milestones designed to build character. Karate training at our Menlo Park dojo builds tenacity, mental pliability, and fortitude. By maintaining your motivation and focusing on your next milestone, your future goals in martial arts will be within reach.

Congratulations to those who successfully graded! We are currently preparing certificates; they will be printed the weekend of the 16th, with detailing and finishing touches to follow. For those with pending submissions, please ensure they are completed early in the new season.

To see when you can pick up your certificates, please view our Menlo Park & Palo Alto Karate Schedule. For further guidance on your progression, refer to the “SKSV Club Guide.”

Tokyu 等級: Club / Dōjō Grading Requirements

In the pursuit of karate excellence, it is evident that not all dōjō are equal. Due to historical lineages and affiliations with prestigious international organizations, Seiwakai Karate Silicon Valley (SKSV) upholds the highest standards of traditional Japanese martial arts. We empower our students to attain their objectives through a meticulously designed grading syllabus.

Our comprehensive curriculum surpasses the requirements set by USA Karate (USA-NKF)—the official representative of the US Olympic Committee—as well as JKF Gōjūkai and Japan Seiwakai Gōjūryū Karatedō. Our “Honbu” (headquarters) in Japan provides the foundational membership that connects our students to these elite global organizations.

The Traditional Belt System (帯の制度)

While many schools use a variety of colors, SKSV adheres to the standardized progression aligned with the Japan Karatedō Federation. This ensures your rank is recognized worldwide.

Belt Color Rank (Kyu) Significance
White 10th Kyu Starting point; no official rank.
Yellow 9th Kyu Initial step in the journey.
Orange 8th & 7th Kyu Marking progress and dedication.
Green 6th & 5th Kyu Proficiency in fundamental techniques.
Purple 4th Kyu An advanced level of competence.
Brown 3rd, 2nd, & 1st Kyu High degree of skill and knowledge.
Black Shodan and above Exceptional basic skill and mastery.

Note: Red and blue belts are reserved specifically for competition scoring. Historically, a red belt signifies a teacher’s license (Hanshi) or a founding member.

General Grading Requirements (格付け要件)

As our membership grows at the Arrillaga Family Community Center, we maintain a structured grading environment to ensure consistency. Below is the general outline for success:

  1. Technical Proficiency: Precise execution of rank-specific techniques and Kata (形).
  2. Karate Principles: Deep understanding of Budo philosophy.
  3. Etiquette (Reigi): Proper conduct toward instructors and peers.
  4. Physical Fitness: Conditioning suitable for traditional practice.
  5. Attendance: Consistent and PUNCTUAL presence at the dojo.
  6. Kumite: Proficiency in sparring and defensive application.

Together, Seiwakai Karate Silicon Valley Gōjūkan continues to uphold the legacy of the Dai Nippon Butokukai, Gōjū-Ryū Karatedō Seiwakai, and the JKF Gōjū-Kai.
