December 2025 SKSV Karate Grading (Shinsa) Results
By Johnpaul Williams – December 31, 2025
Karatedō is a profound Budo—a lifelong journey built upon patience, targeted goals, inevitable obstacles, and rewarding milestones designed to forge character. Karate training at our Menlo Park dōjō demands tenacity, mental pliability, and physical fortitude. Closing out the year with a successful grading is a testament to that dedication. By maintaining your motivation and focusing on your next milestone, your future goals in martial arts will always be within reach.
Congratulations to all students who successfully graded this December! We are currently preparing your official certificates. They will be printed the weekend of the 16th, with traditional detailing and finishing touches to follow. For those with pending submissions, please ensure they are completed early in the new 2026 season so your rank can be formalized.
To see when you can pick up your certificates, please view our Menlo Park & Palo Alto Karate Schedule. For further guidance on your ongoing progression, please refer to the official SKSV Club Guide.
Tokyu (等級): Club and Dōjō Grading Requirements
In the pursuit of karate excellence, it is evident that not all training facilities operate under the same criteria. Due to our direct historical lineages and affiliations with prestigious international organizations, Seiwakai Karate Silicon Valley (SKSV) upholds the absolute highest standards of traditional Japanese martial arts. We empower our students to attain their objectives through a meticulously designed, globally recognized grading syllabus.
Our comprehensive curriculum deliberately surpasses the baseline requirements set by USA Karate (USA-NKF)—the official representative of the US Olympic Committee—as well as the JKF Gōjūkai and Japan Seiwakai Gōjū-Ryū Karatedō. Our “Honbu” (headquarters) in Japan provides the foundational membership that seamlessly connects our Menlo Park students to these elite global organizations.
The Traditional Gōjū-Ryū Belt System (帯の制度)
While many commercial schools use a wide, arbitrary variety of belt colors, SKSV adheres strictly to the standardized progression aligned with the Japan Karatedō Federation. This ensures your rank and hard work are recognized worldwide.
| Belt Color | Rank (Kyu) | Significance & Skill Level |
|---|---|---|
| White | 10th Kyu | The starting point; representing a mind open to learning. |
| Yellow | 9th Kyu | The initial step in grasping foundational body mechanics. |
| Orange | 8th & 7th Kyu | Marking tangible progress, dedication, and balance. |
| Green | 6th & 5th Kyu | Demonstrating solid proficiency in fundamental techniques (Kihon). |
| Purple | 4th Kyu | An advanced level of competence and transitional maturity. |
| Brown | 3rd, 2nd, & 1st Kyu | A high degree of skill, knowledge, and preparation for black belt. |
| Black | Shodan & Above | Exceptional basic skill, mastery of fundamentals, and the beginning of advanced study. |
Note: Red and blue belts are reserved specifically for competition scoring. Historically within our tradition, a red belt signifies a teacher’s license (Hanshi) or a founding member.
General Grading Requirements (格付け要件)
As our membership continues to grow at the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, we maintain a highly structured grading environment to ensure consistency and quality. Below is the general outline for grading success:
- Technical Proficiency: Precise, powerful execution of rank-specific techniques and Kata (形).
- Karate Principles: A deep, demonstrable understanding of Budo philosophy.
- Etiquette (Reigi): Proper conduct, respect, and humility toward instructors and peers.

Together, Seiwakai Karate Silicon Valley Gōjūkan continues to proudly uphold the legacy of the Dai Nippon Butokukai, Gōjū-Ryū Karatedō Seiwakai, and the JKF Gōjūkai.
